MakeSpace’s mission is to put an end to schlepping and to hook New Yorkers up with extra cubic footage in their apartments. Once you’ve uploaded all your stuff to the cloud, the question becomes what to do with all this newfound space.
Why not create a comfy relaxation space? With a little creativity, you can transform any unused section of your apartment into a personalized reading nook! Here’s how:
Start with cushions—and lots of them. If your reading nook is in the corner of a room, try and find an overstuffed chair and ottoman. If you’re working with a newly emptied closet, pile up some throw pillows on top of repurposed couch or patio furniture cushions. Make sure to to keep a light blanket in there too!
Next is lighting. You want your reading nook to be well-lit so you don’t strain your eyes, but you don’t want it to be too bright. To help your mind get to the perfect point of relaxation, try using strands of holiday lights, and supplement with lightly-scented soy candles.
To make the most of your new reading nook, use your books as part of the decor. Repurposed wooden ladders, shipping pallets, or produce crates give a great rustic touch when hung on the walls. These help to define your space, and can be used to display some of your favorite reads. Hang a sheer curtain from string that can define your nook without making it feel closed off or claustrophobic.
Complete your reading nook with a small serving tray or other surface where you can place your mug of coffee or tea while curling up with your book of the week!
